From Shibuya to Fuji!! Mercedes-Benz has brought me to Japan as part of its extraordinary “140 Places” global journey — an incredible adventure being undertaken by three brand-new S-Classes to celebrate 140 years of the automobile!
And my partner on this journey is Gottlieb — one of those three new #MercedesBenz #SClass models — as we set out to explore one of the most fascinating chapters in Mercedes-Benz history.
Gottlieb’s siblings are Carl and Bertha, with all three named after the pioneers behind the automobile. Together, the cars are set to travel more than 50,000km around the world, visiting 140 places with stories connected to Mercedes-Benz, the automobile and the communities they helped shape. But we are the lucky ones, because we get the Japan leg of the trip!
Arguably the coolest destination of them all — not only because of its incredible combination of natural beauty and futuristic city life, but also because of the deep Mercedes-Benz and AMG story found here.
Starting in the heart of Tokyo at the Mercedes-Benz Design Studio in Omotesando, we discover how Mercedes-Benz established itself in Japan, meet beautifully preserved classics from the Mercedes Veterans Club, and explore the evolution of the S-Class from its early roots through to the latest facelifted model.
Over three days, we experience Tokyo itself — from the neon lights of Shibuya and the Japanese culture that has been such a big part of my life for years, to Akihabara, Pokémon Centres, konbini food, the famous Japanese egg sandwich, Wagyu, Ginza and Tokyo’s incredible shopping scene.
Then we head into #Japan’s legendary automotive culture, visiting the famous Daikoku Parking Area and spotting plenty of AMG machinery along the way. And finally, with our V8-powered S-Class, we leave Tokyo behind and head towards Fuji Speedway before travelling to one of the most iconic sights on Earth: Mount Fuji.
