Welcome back to RBR! Today we’ve got what might be the most bizarre yet wonderful #AMG ever made: the GT63 S E Performance!
It’s a car that makes absolutely no sense on paper — 816HP from a V8 hybrid weighing almost 2.3 tonnes, that launches quicker than the AMG ONE hypercar. And yet… it’s also completely irresistible.
This is AMG's first plug-in hybrid GT, pairing a 612HP V8 with an F1-inspired electric rear axle that adds 205HP and up to 1400Nm. It means you’ve got a ballistic 2.8 second launch time, making it officially the fastest AMG road car ever -- and that's a time we beat in real life!
But it's also the heaviest. Nearly 400kg more than a 911 Turbo S. The hybrid is also useless for range, with a measly 7 miles. So is it truly better than the incredible GT63? More importantly: does anyone actually need a car like this — or is this AMG losing the plot again?
In today’s Rapid Review we’ll dive into:
-- The current AMG GT line up — GT43, GT55, GT63, Pro
-- The Old GT Series -- GTS, GT R Pro, GT Black Series
-- A full walkaround: design, technology, chassis
-- The e performance hybrid: F1 battery, e-motor, 2-speed transmission & LSD
-- Power-to-weight vs other GT's and the 911 Turbo S
-- Exhaust sound
-- Full driving review
And finally some discussion on marketing failures around this car: should this have just been called a GT73 to honour the crazy V12s of old? Because for me, this car feels like AMG’s new-age V12. It's not sharper than the GT63 Pro, not cleverer than a 911 T-Hybrid. It’s just… more. More power, more tech, more noise. More reasons to shake your head — then grin stupidly every time you drive it.
Would I buy it? Do I understand why it exists? It seems totally illogical, but it threatens to be completely addictive. And sometimes that’s what AMGs need to be -- let's find out if this one is!
