At 635BHP, few have ever left a GT63S and said: that needs more power. Except maybe AMG, who took the world’s fastest 4 seat 4 door on the ring, and gave it an F1 derived 843 BHP hybrid power train.
This is the GT63S E Performance, carrying the same model designation as Lewis and George’s F1 car, it is the first car from AMG we get to drive that gives us a glimpse at every significant future car, which will almost all make use of the P3 Hybrid system this car has.
I’ll show you the tech, the new interior driver controls, the insane mix of EV and V8 sound, before we launch control the car onto Spanish roads and see what the future looks like.
The big flagship cars by #AMG coming in this new generation are almost all going to pair combustion with electric power in some form. The most powerful of those will use the type of system this GT63S E is going to show us in full force today!
That includes the top flagship versions of the new SL, S63 and every other big name to follow. As well as the next C63 and GLC63 with a 4 cylinder version, using even more AMG ONE hypercar tech.
So what is this P3 Hybrid? It pairs an AMG combustion engine with a hybrid system, developed with F1 and the Project one. This GT uses the awesome 4.0 AMG V8.
An engine that when used in isolation gives the current #MercedesAMG GT63S 635BHP and a 0-60 of 3.2 seconds.
This hybrid V8 GT, eclipses this with System power of up 843 BHP, 1400NM of torque, and zero-60 of 2.9 seconds
So, how does it all work?
First the engine changes: we have the same 4.0 V8. Where they added a belt-driven starter-alternator (BSG) which combines the alternator and starter in one component, and gives an output of 14 hp.
Then the big and clever change : the Electric Drive Unit or EDU. This is the electric motor, unlike having the electric motor in-between the combustion engine and transmission which is more typical, AMG have installed a super clever unit on the rear axle instead!
This compact unit houses some key things within it, firstly: the E-Motor itself which is a permanently excited one. There is also a 2 speed transmission where the 2nd gear is for higher speeds and finally a more familiar limited slip differential. Power is managed in a totally variable way, meaning both ICE and Electrical power can be sent to any wheel as required. In this set up, the EDU operates independently of the transmission, so it’s more efficient.
Theres a full EV mode possible too up to 130 km/h, it’s normally rear-wheel drive, but power can be sent to the front wheels via the cardan and drive shafts
Next: The AMG Performance battery! This is an always alive system, directly out of F1, and delveloped by High Performance Powertrains (HPP) Formula 1 engine forge in Brixworth and Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach. Tech is shared with the HyperCar ONE.
This is a 400VOLT battery, with 560 cells and can provide continuous power of 93BHP, Or 201 BHP at peak for 10 seconds! This is added to the V8 engine’s base power!
It weighs 89KG which gives it a power to weight density of 1.7kw, which is double that of traditionally cooled systems.
The entire system adds around 200KG weight compared to the GT63S.
The new SL seems like it’ll benefit from a similar system, and the same is true of the upcoming S63. I wonder if the upcoming new gen of the GT 2 door will get it too? Hmm.
Will it be worth it? We’ll find out today.

843BHP?! New GT63S E Performance V8 Hybrid AMG!
Eight hundred and forty three horses. In a 5 seat family sedan. What monster have you created #AMG?! The beast goes by the name of the #MercedesAMG GT63 S E Performance, sadly a missed opportunity by AMG to call it GT73, despite having registered all the trademarks. Likely because they want to focus on the “E Performance” brand rhetoric.
Like the next C63, this pairs and AMG combustion engine with a P3 hybrid system, developed with F1 and the Project one. This car however, uses an AMG V8, namely the awesome 4.0 bi turbo found in modern AMGs.
The current GT63S is the quickest 4 seat car on the Nurburgring, and already produces 635BHP with a 0-60 of 3.2 seconds. This hybrid V8 GT, annihilates this with System power of 843 BHP, 1200NM of torque, and zero-60 of 2.9 seconds!
The extra power is thanks to the Electric Drive Unit or EDU. This a clever package on the rear axle with the electric motor "E-Motor", which is a permanently excited unit. There is also a 2 speed transmission for that motor and our usual limited slip differential. Power is managed in a 100% variable way, so both V8 and EV power can be sent to any wheel.
Theres a full EV mode possible too up to 130 km/h, it’s normally rear-wheel drive, and allows up to 12KM range only. This is also supported by the AMG Performance battery delveloped by High Performance Powertrains (HPP) Formula 1. It's a 400VOLT battery and gives continuous power of 93BHP or over 200 BHP at peak! Check our full video on the system below:
